ARTIST QUOTE
“Sometimes it is just a song lyric, a sentence or a word that provides the impulse for a chain of associations and image creations. In addition to chance, the choice of image motifs is based on my own biography, a “wide field” with a few corner posts buried quite deeply.
For me, the guidelines for design are combining concrete and abstract elements to create a multi-layered image statement that seeks unknown territory outside of norms and habits and is open to an intuitive understanding, but can also serve to convey insights.”
Wolfgang Stratmann
INTRODUCTION
"The work of the trained set designer, studied art historian and now retired teacher Wolfgang Stratmann is very lively.
Using various printing techniques, he brings collections of motifs rich in images onto paper in a collage-like manner, always trying out new processes and compositions and thus creating series of images that are worth examining in detail for differences and similarities. Relief and intaglio printing, etching, woodcuts, stereotype or screen printing - each process has its special character, its individual aesthetics and its specific suitability for certain purposes in the art and media industry, which Wolfgang Stratmann knows how to talk about competently and interestingly.
But his works also tell - mostly small-scale and always excitingly composed - almost like picture stories or comics about what particularly interests their creator: about ships and trains that move through the pictures, about music that - like the Beatles songs " Strawberry fields” or “Yellow submarine”, for example – inspired the depictions. And again and again the compositions are reconsidered, details are changed, removed, added and another print is made - using the same technique or even yet a different one.
Wolfgang Stratmann is a researcher, a friend of experimentation and development. However he doesn't work towards the one goal, but sees each individual state as an important and independent result, a completed work."

"Next door to the blues" is the name of a song by Etta James. It's about someone who just can't shake the blues. This idea also gives rise to the title of the print series, with which artist Wolfgang Stratmann seeks his own visual approach to this feeling. Song titles are taken up as well as important places and myths in blues history.
